The family is the fundamental unit of society, yet too often economic policies are designed without consideration of their impact on families.
The Family as Economic Unit
Families are not merely consumers but producers of the most valuable resource of all: well-formed human beings capable of contributing to society.
Current Policy Failures
Many current economic policies inadvertently undermine families. Tax systems that penalize marriage, labor regulations that make it difficult for parents to balance work and family responsibilities, and housing policies that price families out of decent neighborhoods all contribute to family instability.
A Family-Centered Alternative
Conservative economic policy should prioritize family formation and stability. This means:
- Tax policies that recognize the costs of raising children and do not penalize marriage
- Workplace flexibility that allows parents to be present for their children
- Housing policies that support family homeownership
- Education policies that empower parents to choose the best schooling for their children
Economic Freedom and Family Responsibility
A family-centered economy is not one of government dependency but of economic freedom combined with family responsibility. The Philippines has a strong tradition of family solidarity. Our economic policies should reinforce, not undermine, this tradition.
