Abortion

Defending the Sacred Right to Life from Conception

The defense of human life from the moment of conception to natural death is a non-negotiable principle of Catholic social teaching and natural law. In the Philippines, the Constitution explicitly protects the life of the unborn, reflecting the Filipino people's deep respect for the sanctity of human life. We stand firmly against all forms of direct abortion as a grave moral evil.

The Biological and Philosophical Foundation

Modern embryology confirms what natural law has long recognized: human life begins at fertilization. At the moment of conception, a new, genetically distinct human organism comes into existence. As the embryologist Keith Moore affirms, "Human development begins at fertilization when a sperm fuses with an oocyte to form a single cell, the zygote" (Moore et al., 2019, p. 1).

The Teaching of the Church

The Catholic Church has consistently taught that direct abortion is a grave moral evil. The Second Vatican Council declared that "from the moment of its conception life must be guarded with the greatest care, while abortion and infanticide are unspeakable crimes" (Vatican Council II, 1965, Gaudium et Spes, no. 51).

Pope St. John Paul II, in his encyclical Evangelium Vitae, stated unequivocally: "I declare that direct abortion, that is, abortion willed as an end or as a means, always constitutes a grave moral disorder, since it is the deliberate killing of an innocent human being" (John Paul II, 1995, no. 62).

The Philippine Legal Framework

The 1987 Philippine Constitution provides explicit protection for the unborn: "The State shall equally protect the life of the mother and the life of the unborn from conception" (Article II, Section 12). The Revised Penal Code of the Philippines (Act No. 3815, 1930) criminalizes abortion under Articles 256–259.

Our Commitment

We affirm the sacred dignity of every human life from conception to natural death. We call for the continued enforcement of laws protecting the unborn, the expansion of support services for pregnant women in crisis, and the promotion of a culture of life that welcomes every child as a gift from God.
