Historical Documents

Primary Sources of Philippine Conservative Thought

The intellectual tradition of Philippine conservatism draws on a rich archive of historical documents that articulate principles of faith, nation, and ordered liberty. These documents—from papal encyclicals to constitutional texts to the writings of Filipino thinkers—provide the foundations for a distinctively Filipino conservative philosophy.

Papal Documents Relevant to the Philippines

Rerum Novarum (1891) by Pope Leo XIII addressed the condition of workers and laid the foundation for modern Catholic social teaching, defending private property while insisting on obligations to the common good.

Centesimus Annus (1991) by Pope St. John Paul II offered a nuanced assessment of capitalism and socialism after the fall of communism, articulating principles of economic freedom, human dignity, and the common good.

Evangelium Vitae (1995) by Pope St. John Paul II defended the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death, providing the theological foundation for Filipino Catholic opposition to abortion.

The 1987 Philippine Constitution

The 1987 Philippine Constitution reflects Filipino Catholic values in several provisions:

  • Article II, Section 12: Protects "the life of the mother and the life of the unborn from conception."
  • Article III, Section 5: Guarantees religious freedom.
  • Article XV: Defines the family as "the foundation of the nation."

Using These Documents

These documents are not merely historical artifacts but living resources for contemporary engagement. Filipino conservatives should study these texts, understand their arguments, and apply their principles to current issues.
